25 August 2007– Lewes 0 Braintree T 0

Steve Robinson marked his 100th appearance for Lewes with a faultless defensive display, but other than that there was very little about which to get excited as the Rooks were denied their fourth consecutive league win by a determined Braintree outfit.

Boss Steve King was able to named an unchanged starting eleven for the third successive game, a luxury which was rarely afforded him last season, as the home side sought to maintian their 100% start to the campaign.  However it was clear from very early on that the visitors had come for a point, and this they eventually achieved with a masterclass in stifling the opposition through hard work, a physical approach and a willingness to break up the flow of the game with fouls when all else failed.

It was not pretty, but it was very effective, and indeed George Borg's men could also lay claim to the only half chance of the entire 90 minutes, when Steve Williams saved bravely at the feet of Iron striker James Baker midway through the second half.  There were plenty of corners and set pieces in and around the box for both sides, but nothing came of any of them, and the game drifted towards its inevitable climax with only a series of suspect decisions by match official Mr Laver to arouse the crowd from their slumber.  On the plus side a first clean sheet of the season was recorded, and there will surely be a lot more entertainment on offer at Bognor on Monday.

Lewes: Williams, Conroy, Barness, Robinson, Simpemba, Drury (Watts 63), Holloway, Wormull (Cade 67), Selley, Binns, booth (O'Connor 67).
