Boss Steve King named the same starting eleven which had seen off Newport five days previously, and his side received an early boost when Kirk Watts was needlessly barged over in the box with only two minutes on the clock. Paul Booth duly converted his fifth spot kick in seven games and his eighth goal of the season on the day that he was named Conference South player of the month for August.
Welling's response was big on effort but low on chances to show for all their hard work, with the back four of Barness (until a groin injury ended his evening, replaced by the equally impressive Lewis Hamilton), Conroy, Simpemba and Robinson again immaculate in front of underworked 'keeper Steve Williams. The one small blemish came when Omari Coleman briefly escaped the shackles, but he shot over when well placed and that was the last of the Welling opportunities for the evening.
After the break it was Drury's introduction on 65 minutes which marked the beginning of a spell of Lewes pressure, and this culminated with the winger's close range finish after Wings 'keeper Clark Masters had done brilliantly to keep out a Booth shot. There was still time for the former Welling striker to head into the side netting near the end, before youngster Medi Koroma got his first taste of the big time as a late substitute.
Lewes: Williams, Conroy, Barness (Hamilton 45), Robinson, Simpemba, Watts (Drury 65), Selley, Davis, Wormull, Cade (Koroma 88) Booth.
