15 September 2007– St Albans 1 Lewes 1

Paul Booth bagged an 81st minute equaliser but then missed an injury time penalty as the Rooks were held on an ultimately frustrating afternoon in Hertfordshire.

Rooks boss Steve King made two changes from the starting eleven against Welling, with Lewis Hamilton coming in at left back for the injured Anthony Barness, and Andy Drury replacing Kirk Watts as Jamie Cade switched from right to left wing.  New signing Matt Groves was named amongst the substitutes.  Tom Davis made his first return to his old stamping ground, whilst the home side included ex Albion defender Gary Elphick, son of the former Rooks number 2 of the same name, and popular ex Lewes defender Junior Harvey was on the bench.

On a surprisngly warm afternoon the visitors made a positive start, and indeed might have had the game wrapped up with in the first quarter of an hour had they taken their chances.  Booth found space in the box as early as the second minute, but hesitated and the danger passed, and then Steve Robinson rose highest to meet a corner from the left by Simon Wormull but could not keep his header down.  On eight minutes Davis's quickly taken free kick released Drury, but Saints 'keeper Nicky Eyre was alert to the danger and made the first of a series of fine saves.

Booth had an even better chance on the quarter hour mark when he found himself clean through with only Eyre to beat, who again came out on top as the striker tried to go round him.  The striker then laid the loose ball back to Wormull, but with the goal unoccupied his shot went well over the bar.

After that the game became rather scrappy and referee Mr McGill took centre stage, electing not to send off Saints midfielder Mark Beard for scything down Jamie Cade just moments after being cautioned for dissent.  The home side did create one chance of note just before the break, but Steve Williams did well to tip Daniel Morgan's shot round his left hand post, and half time arrived with the game still goalless.

After the interval there was again a lull in terms of goalmouth action, although Wormull did miss another very presentable opportunity, shooting well over from just inside the area after good work by Jay Conroy and Drury.  The introduction of Groves for Ian Selley saw a change to a 4-4-2 formation, and soon afterwards Mr McGill elected once more to spare a St Albans player an early bath, when Lee Clarke clattered into Jay Conroy, but escaped with a ticking-off rather than a second yellow card.

This apparent injustice seemed to galvanise the Rooks, and they then laid siege to the home goal.  However Eyre continued to be in inspired form, and the home side edged in front with twelve minutes remaining when a swift counter attack ended with a calm finish by Morgan.

Three minutes later Booth's predatory instincts earned him a ninth goal in eight games after he rediverted a Drury shot which was going wide.  However when the flying winger was halted in his tracks by Clarke just inside the box with seconds remaining, the league's top scorer's penalty lacked the power and direction of the previous five that he had successfully converted, and Eyre guessed correctly, saving low to his right before smothering the loose ball.

Lewes: Williams, Conroy, Hamilton, Simpemba, Robinson, Drury, Davis, Selley (Groves 63), Wormull, Cade, Booth.
