Boss Steve King made two changes from the side which had started against Welling, with Paul Booth ruled out after a minor operation on Thursday, and Simon Wormull dropping to the bench. Groves thus made his first start for the Rooks, with Jamie Cade also coming in on the right wing and Andy Drury being handed a roving role in a 4-4-1-1 formation. The home side included former Rook midfielder Mo Harkin, whilst ex Albion stalwart Charlie Oatway made his debut.
The visitors made an excellent start and created two great chances to open the scoring withing the first five minutes. First a swift counter attack left Dale Binns in the clear with just Havant 'keeper Kevin Scriven to beat, but the former Farnborough stopper spread himself to block the shot. Then Paul Kennett escaped his marker to meet a Drury free kick from the right, but he could not get his header on target from the edge of the six yard box.
Next to try his luck was Tom Davis, who got on the end of a slick passing move but fired his shot from the edge of the box just wide of Scriven's left hand post. The home side did then have some possession and Oatway's cross to the far post almost unlocked the Rooks defence, but Shaun Wilkinson could not hit the target.
The game became rather scrappy but the visitors still seemed more likely to break the deadlock, and Scriven again had to be quickly off his line to deny Cade after Kennett's pass had sent him racing clear of the defence. It was thus somewhat of a surprise when the home side went in front eight minutes before the interval with their first shot on target. Harkin's cross from the right was palmed away at full stretch by Steve Williams, only for Tony Taggart to seize on the loose ball and drill a left foot shot into the net to make it 1-0.
Within six minutes of the restart the Rooks had the equaliser which they deserved. The Hawks defence gave the ball away deep inside their own half, and Andy Drury advanced to the edge of the area before producing a delightful chip which eluded Scriven and went in off the underside of the crossbar.
Although the home side then had perhaps their best spell of possession of the afternoon, they failed to create any clearcut opportunities. Substitute Kirk Watts missed a great chance shortly after coming on for Drury, and then with sixteen minutes remaining, Groves displayed his striker's instinct for the second time in four days, pouncing to hook home from the edge of the six yard box after Binns' shot had been half blocked. The defence then dealt admirably with the preditable aerial onslaught, and a first ever win at Westleigh Park was duly sealed.
