Boss Steve King made just one enforced change from the eleven who had started against Cambridge City, with Anthony Barness replacing the injured Lewis Hamilton. The home side started the game confidently, and Dale Binns should have given them the lead after an electrifying 50 yard run which ended with a shot steered wide of the post with his weaker right foot.
The visitors were struggling to stay on level teams, and it came as no surprise when they fell behind, Wormull linking neatly with Matt Groves before sliding the ball past onrushing Sutton 'keeper Phil Wilson.
Had either of two strong penalty shouts for fouls on Groves and Binns been rewarded, the game might have been over as a contest by the break, but as it was the Conference South's bottom side produced a sterling second half display which lacked only a finishing touch on a number of occasions.
With five minutes remaining only a magnificent last ditch tackle by Jay Conroy prevented an almost certain equaliser for the Us, and within seconds it was Paul Booth's turn to be denied by a brilliant intervention after he had rounded Wilson and looked certain to make it 2-0. A couple of goalmouth scrambles later the agony for home fans was over, and the Rooks now stand just 90 minutes away from a second successive appearance in the first round proper of the FA Cup.
Lewes: Williams, Conroy, Barness, Robinson, Simpemba, Cade, Davis (Selley 82), Wormull (Kennett 56), Binns, Groves (Legge 90), Booth.
