Rooks 'keeper Steve Williams had a rare bad day at the office as his side fell to their first defeat of the season on an afternoon went nothing went right for the visitors.

Boss Steve King made one enforced change from the eleven who had started the previous Sunday against Sutton, with Ian Selley replacing the injured Simon Wormull in midfield.

The opening exchanges were fast and furious, but it was the home side who edged in front on 12 minutes.  Williams left his goal to attempt a clearance, but did not get enough distance on it, and was also slow to get back into position, leaving Paul Sales the opportunity to volley what was still an excellent finish into the bottom corner from well outside the penalty area.

Three minutes later the big 'keeper was caught in two minds as the ball looped up inside the area off the head of Steve Robinson, and his eventual decision to backpedal proved a bad one as Andy Forbes nipped in to head home a second.

The afternoon went from bad to worse for the Rooks, with Conroy carried off with concussion having clashed with Sales, who somehow escpaed a second yellow card, and his replacement Lewis Hamilton not even making it as far as the break before departing with a recurrence of his hamstring injury.  However they still created chances during that period, with Paul Booth hitting the bar and Matt Groves being denied by a fine save by James Pullen.

Hamilton's injury led to a change in tactics, with new signing Leroy Griffiths coming off the bench to replace him as King switched to a 3-4-3 formation.  The Rooks were very much in control in the early stages of the second half, and had Booth not missed an open goal on 56 minutes, things might have turned out very differently.  As it was Matt Hann's goal on the hour mark effectively ended the contest, and the Rooks' misery was compounded by the sight of Dale Binns limping off with a groin strain which will almost certainly rule him out of Wednesday night's clash with Maidenhead.

Lewes: Williams, Conroy (Hamilton 19(Griffiths 44)), Barness, Robinson, Simpemba, Drury, Selley, Davis, Binns (Watts 72), Booth, Groves.
