Boss Steve King made three changes to the eleven who had started the disappointing midweek draw against Maidenhead. Cade replaced the injured Andy Drury on the right wing, and behind him Jay Conroy returned, allowing Anthony Barness to switch back to the left and Dale Binns to move forward to the left wing. This meant that Leroy Griffiths dropped to the bench, with Paul Kennett the third change in place of Tom Davis.
After a cagey opening quarter of an hour, it was the home side who had the first half chance, but Mark Marshall failed to make contact with a cross from the right having found himself in space in the box. Paul Booth then had two good chances to break the deadlock, but fired the first high and wide, and was denied by the feet of Grays 'keeper Danny Knowles when he hit the target with the second.
A dubious free kick on the edge of their penalty area spelled danger for the Rooks on the half hour mark, but Danny Kedwell could not keep his curling effort under the bar. Binns delivered his first dangerous cross of the afternoon five minutes before the interval which was excellently defended under pressure by impressive Grays defender Jamie Stuart, whilst the final action of the half came when Knowles had to be quickly off his line to stop Booth from latching on to a long punt forward by Conroy.
After the break the Rooks again had a good opportunity to edge in front, when Cade released Wormull and he tricked his way past the last defender, but his shot from the edge of the box with his weaker left foot was off target. Knowles was then again quickly off his line to thwart Booth as he raced onto a Cade through ball.
There followed a lull before the home side began to exert some pressure, but they still failed to create anything of note before taking the lead with eleven minutes remaining. Substitute Aaron O'Connor found himself in space on the edge of the penalty area, and was given time to turn unchallenged and fire a low left foot shot into the bottom corner to give his side an undeserved advantage.
King immediately threw on Leon Legge and Matt Groves to join Griffiths up front, but the Rooks looked to be heading out of the competition until a long clearance by Steve Williams was misjudged by Grays defender Adam Gross, who looped a header past the stranded Knowles from fully 25 yards out. The Rooks might even have booked their place in the next round in injury time, when Griffiths' delicate chip just eluded the onrushing Groves, but in the end they had to be content with a replay at the Pan on Wednesday.
