Rooks boss Steve King rested Paul Kennett, Jamie Cade, Paul Booth and reverted to a two pronged attack in the shape of Matt Groves and Leroy Griffiths, with Kirk Watts starting on the right wing. The first half was a pretty sterile affair, with the main talking point being referee Mr McKoy's decision to show a yellow rather than red card to Us defender John Scarborough after he had hauled back Groves when the big striker was clean through on goal.
However after the interval it was a completely different story, with the home side dominating from the first whistle to the last. Sutton 'keeper Phil Wilson had already denied Groves and Watts when he flung out an arm but could not prevent Gary Holloway from giving his side the lead on 57 minutes with a rasping drive from the edge of the area.
Four minutes later it was 2-0, when Griffiths latched onto a neat flick by Dale Binns and chipped delightfully over Wilson to record his first goal in the red and black. The visitors tried hard to recover from this double setback, but simply could not create any clear cut opportunities of note, and after Wilson had made several more fine saves, he was beaten twice in injury time by Davis and Groves as the Rooks moved to within one point of regaining the lead of the Conference South.
