4 December 2007– Eastbourne Borough 7 Lewes 2

Paul Booth's first half penalty and Jay Lovett's comical own goal were rare moments of cheer for Rooks fans on a night when their team were well below their best and thus bowed out of the Setanta Shield.

There were four changes from Saturday's starting eleven, with Paul Kennett and Lewis Hamilton coming in for Tom Davis and Anthony Barness, who were rested but named amongst the substitutes.  Ian Simpemba and Derek Duncan came in for Steve Robinson and Dale Binns, who were both unavailable due to work commitments.

The omens were bad from the moment that an unmarked Adam Wilde was left with a tap in after only nine minutes, and five minutes later Andy Atkin looped a header from a long throw over Steve Williams.  Booth's penalty reduced the arrears after a Boro defender had blocked a goalbound effort by Andy Drury with his arm, but a poor decision against Leon Legge led to the two goal lead being restored, with Atkin nodding home the resultant free kick.

The fourth Boro goal was a calamitous moment for Williams, who in difficult blustery conditions allowed a miscued cross from home full back Andy Ballard to squirm through his hands.  However former Lewes favourite Lovett's sliced clearance made it 4-2 seconds before the interval, and when Nathan Crabbe was shown a straight red card for a terrible two footed lunge on Hamilton early in the second period, there was still cause for hope.

However Atkin had not finished, and his strength and determination earned him his hat trick just before the hour mark to end the game as a contest.  From then on it was all downhill for the visitors, who lost Legge for a highly debatable second yellow card offence, then saw Derek Duncan's handball on the line punsihed with another red card and a penalty which was duly converted by Alan Tait. The same player rubbed more salt into the wound in injury time whith a shot which took a huge deflection before looping into the corner of the net to complete an emphatic victory for his side.

Lewes: Williams, Conroy, Hamilton (Cade 65), Simpemba, Legge, Duncan, Holloway (Davis 46), Kennett, Booth, Groves.
