1 March 2008 - Lewes 1 Thurrock 0

Jean-Michel Sigere came off the bench to score a winner with the last kick of the game as the Rooks stretched their lead at the top of the Conference South to four points with a hard fought victory.

Boss Steve King made two changes from the side which had played so well the previous weekend in south Wales, both of them enforced.  Steve Robinson missed out through suspension and Andy Drury was ruled out with a foot injury.  Leon Legge and Tom Davis took their places.

There was little by way of goalmouth action in the first period on an afternoon when a strong wind did little to aid either side.  Simom Wormull did force fomer Rooks loanee 'keeper David Blackmore to make one good save low to his left after Dale Binns had cut the ball back from the byline.  The Lewes winger was also involved in a swift counter attack which ended with Davis firing just over the bar.

However unfortunately it was once again the match officials who provided the major talking points of the opening 45 minutes.  Quite how the assistant referee failed to spot a Thurrock defender handling in the area midway through the half is a mystery, but this decision paled into insignificance when compared with referee Mr Lugg's amazing decision to book Hamid Barr for diving after he had been tripped just as he was about to sidefoot the ball into an empty net.

The home side again had reason to feel hard done by after the break, when Bai Mas Lettejallow clearly blocked a goalbound effort by Gary Holloway with his arm in the area, but again Mr Lugg waved play on.  However ultimately the Rooks were indebted to 'keeper Steev Williams for three excellent saves which kept the scores level until Sigere's dramatic late intervention, which more than made up for the two great chances which he had earlier squandered.

Lewes: Williams, Hamilton, Barness, Legge, Simpemba, Wormull, Holloway, Davis, Binns, Booth, Barr (Sigere 61).
