Rivers sails into the England squad Friday 5 February 2010

Most lads his age would be looking forward to a few days in Malaga for entirely different reasons, but Lewes Under 18 striker Tim Rivers will be heading to Spain in a few weeks time to play football, as part of the England Schools squad.

Following in the footsteps of current Lewes team mate David Wheeler and former Rook Matt Whitehead, who has won a place for the second season running, Tim has been involved in trials since the autumn and found out the news a week ago.

“It’s a great feeling to know that you’ve been chosen to play for your country,” said Tim, who is studying for his A levels at St Wilfred’s in Crawley. “Whatever level it’s at, it’s for your country at the end of the day.”

Tim was due to be part of a four day trial at Lilleshall last week, but the weather put paid to that and it turned into a two day trial instead, with the players told on Friday. Even a friendly match against Australia fell victim to the weather but by then, Tim’s selection had been assured.

As well as a training camp in Malaga, the England squad will play Gibraltar and travel to the US before the Centenary Shield in the spring.

Tim will be looking to make his mark for England in games against the Home Nations, with two of them at Carlisle and Burton Albion due to be shown live on Sky in April.

Tim’s selection is more proud news for Lewes FC, which has now sent three players to the England squad in two seasons.

Congratulations on your achievement Tim and everyone at the club wishes you the best of luck.
