Rooks throw away vital points Saturday 27 February 2010
Lewes let a three goal lead slip away in the final 17 minutes against fellow strugglers Worcester City this afternoon.
A noisy contingent of City fans could barely believe their team had come back from the dead after the Rooks looked home and dry at 3-0.
Lewes went ahead after six minutes when Tom Kemp's foul on Ross Sutton earned the Rooks a penalty which Joe Keehan slotted home for his 13th goal of the season.
Neither side made much of an impact for the rest of the half, but Lewes doubled the lead five minutes after the break when Kane Louis dazzled the City defence, evading a series of challenges before a neat finish.
David Wheeler took advantage of a defensive mix-up to put Lewes three up in the 72nd minute - but then it all went wrong.
A minute later, Lewes struggled to clear the ball and it fell to defender Graham Ward on the edge of the area who blasted the ball past Banks.
In the 75th minute, a free kick caused confusion in the area and substitute Marc McGregor appeared in front of Banks before reducing the deficit.
The home supporters were reeling and Worcester pushed on for an unlikely equaliser. The Rooks seemed to shed confidence in the closing minutes and after Lewes sub Louis Pople missed a good opportunity to score in front of goal, the inevitable happened.
Two minutes into injury time, McGregor capped a fine substitute display by steering the ball past Banks in front of the grateful City fans.
Lewes now take on Eastleigh at the Dripping Pan on Wednesday night, kick off 7.45pm.
