LADIES NEWS
These are exciting times for Lewes Ladies FC, whose debut last season in the South East Combination League culminated in a top five finish and a League Cup final appearance.
With a balanced squad of players and solid financial backing, Lewes' rise is set to continue this season as they pursue manager Jacquie Agnew's ambition of becoming Sussex's highest ranked club.
After several seasons sitting comfortably in the London & South East Regional league, Lewes narrowly missed out on promotion to local rivals Whitehawk in 2005/06. No such problems the following season however, as Lewes ran away with the title and secured promotion to the South East Combination League.
The ladies' squad is fully integrated into Lewes Football Club and benefits from the fantastic pitch at the Dripping Pan. Ronnie Moore is the Ladies Director of Football and holds a prominent role within the club's management structure. Jacquie, now in her sixth season as manager, is only the second manager in over 12 years at Lewes such is the team's stability.
The deep roots sown by previous manager Ron Moore over the previous seven years has provided the springboard for Jacquie to evolve the side within the modern game. “The facilities are first class,” she said, “and we really feel a part of the club as a whole.” Jacquie's favourite saying is 'evolution not revolution' and this is echoed throughout the club in general, such is the whole club's progress in recent seasons.
Lewes have an abundance of coaches with various FA badges to vary the training schedule, and England under-15's coach Josie Clifford is also on board in an active coaching role. Mark Potter from the LFC's Community department has been involved in the Ladies pre season programme, whilst Sussex Downs College offers a women's football development programme on which several members of the Lewes squad are current or past students.
All the hard work behind the scenes has translated into success on the pitch and Jacquie is rightfully proud of her squad's achievements. The club is sitting at its highest ever position in the football pyramid and shows no sign of slowing down.
Last season, Lewes posted a creditable W11 D3 L5 overall record, scoring 57 goals in the process. “We've adapted quickly to the higher standard,” says Jacquie, “since our style of play is to keep the ball down and play football. Every member of the squad continues to raise her game and I'll be looking for more of the same this season.”
Lewes' success has not gone unnoticed and they've attracted a number of new players from Combination, higher League sides and Centres of Excellence. “There is a good balance in the team,” says captain Kelly Newton, herself a player with Premier League experience. “We are continuing to attract quality players who like what we have to offer. This season we have signed four very good players in Jules Denny (Fulham COE), Emma Millington (Brighton), Serena Everett (West Ham) and Charlotte Bennett (Littlehampton) and they have all slotted in well and added some more quality.”
The season has started well with two wins against Cambridge and Gillingham although the Ladies were very unlucky to only draw up at Wellingborough.
“This season will be hard in that we know what to expect” said Jacquie. “I have set the team some challenging targets, but I'm confident that we can continue to progress and hopefully become not only the highest League club in Sussex but the most progressive”
“I want to keep the momentum going, we have a really strong unit but with a couple of new signings this would really enable us to push for promotion into the Premier League. I'm looking for people with the potential and ambition to play in the higher leagues because that's where I want to be in the near future.”
Over half of the Team are strongly represented in the Sussex County squad and have gained valuable experience playing with some of the best players in the county.
