Crystal Palace 2 - 1 Lewes

Danielle Lane's equaliser wasn't enough for Lewes, as a late goal from Crystal Palace saw the Rooks lose 2-1 at Hayes Lane.

The hosts got the game started, but it was the Rooks providing the early pressure. A good ball from Ellie Hack found Georgia Timms who tried to play in a cross, but it was blocked.

Tatiana Saunders was called into action early on to punch a cross away from goal. The No.1 then did well to save Amber Gaylor’s shot.

Ellie Leek had the first clear shot on goal on 15 minutes but could only send her shot over the crossbar.

Only moments later, Ini Umotong went close. Lucy Ashworth-Clifford played in a dangerous cross that only needed a small touch to direct it towards goal, but it was just out of the striker’s reach.

Great defending from Sophie O’Rourke stopped the Palace counter attack. The defender used her pace to catch Bianca Baptiste and intercept the attempted pass.

The Lewes goalkeeper was alert to the danger on 24 minutes when she came off her line quickly to smother the ball before Baptiste could reach it.

Captain Rhian Cleverly tried her luck just before the half-hour mark. The centre-back drove forward and fired a shot on target that was palmed behind for a corner.

Saunders was called into action again two minutes later. A cross went over Hack and Saunders, but the ‘keeper recovered well to make the save.

The Eagles scored the opener on 41 minutes. Baptiste got past Hack and laid it off to Gaylor who found the top corner from 20 yards.

Lewes started the second half well and found the equaliser on 50 minutes. Ashworth-Clifford skipped past the defenders and found Umotong. The striker then squared the ball across the face of goal and Lane fired it in.

On 66 minutes, Megan Mackey found Ashworth-Clifford, but a heavy touch saw the ball get away from the attacker and run through to the ‘keeper. Baptiste then went close at the other end as she sent her effort wide.

Mollie Rouse played a deep free-kick to the back post looking for Georgia Timms, but it was just over the striker’s head.

Hack made an important block to deny Ffion Morgan who was able to break down the left and cut in on her right foot and attempt a shot on goal.

Katie Rood came on to the pitch on 81 minutes and a minute later made an impact. The New Zealand international got past the defender and found Ashworth-Clifford, whose low shot was saved by Chloe Morgan.

With only four minutes of the 90 remaining, Crystal Palace found the winner. A corner came into the box and Umotong did well to clear the first shot off the line. However, after the ball bounced around the box, it fell to Lizzie Waldie who fired low to beat Saunders and find the net.
